December 2016 Issue

Greetings from the Chairman

Greetings McHenry County Resident:

For the past two years, it has been a great pleasure to serve as McHenry County Board Chairman. I am proud of what the Board has accomplished during my tenure as Chairman. The County has continued to reduce the number of County positions while providing quality services to residents. Infrastructure projects have been completed and plans for future projects are in motion. The County has improved incentives for local businesses and industry to support jobs and economic growth. The County remains in strong fiscal health and the envy of county governments around the State. I sincerely appreciate the hard work and dedication of the Count Board and County government staff to serving you and all residents of McHenry County.

New County Board members will be sworn in on Monday, December 5th. As a County Board member, I look forward to working with the incoming County Board and Elected County Board Chairman to continue to reduce the property tax burden and improve services for residents.

Wishing you a Happy Holidays!

Joe Gottemoller

The McHenry County Mental Health Board Hosts Adult Mental Health First Aid to Train Instructors

The McHenry County Mental Health Board and the National Council for Behavioral Health is pleased to announce an exciting opportunity for individuals to become a Certified Mental Health First Aid Instructor.

Just as CPR trains people to assist an individual having a heart attack, becoming a Certified Mental Health First Aid Instructor prepares participants to interact with a person developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis.

The National Council for Behavioral Health will deliver an Adult Mental Health First Aid Instructor Certification Training from April 3rd - 7th, 2017, at the Mental Health Board in Crystal Lake. The deadline to submit application is December 31, 2016.

One in five Americans experiences a mental illness each year, but many are reluctant to seek help or simply don't know where to turn for care.

Who should apply to become an instructor?
A Mental Health First Aid Instructor is required to serve as a presenter, a facilitator, and most importantly an ambassador of the Mental Health First Aid USA program. It is required that an instructor candidate:

* Has general knowledge of mental health and substance use issues
* Has experience teaching groups of adults
* Understands best practices in adult learning
* Has experience facilitating groups

Three low cost MCAC rabies vaccination and microchip events offered Appointments needed for clinics scheduled in December and January

Your pet has a better chance of being reunited with your family if it has a microchip for quick identification and a current rabies vaccination/registration record.  McHenry County Animal Control & Adoption Center (MCAC) will host three low cost rabies vaccination and microchip clinics for McHenry County Residents in December 2016 and January 2017, at its Crystal Lake facility, 100 N Virginia Street (intersection of Woodstock Street and Route 14).  All pets must be leashed or in carriers. Please do not bring animals that are in heat. Appointments are necessary and can be made by calling MCAC at 815-459-6222. Clinics are scheduled for the following dates and times:

Wednesday, December 14th from 3:30PM-5:30PM

Thursday, December 15th from 1:00PM-4:00PM

Wednesday, January 25th 2017 3:00PM-5:00PM

Rabies vaccinations are $10 for one year or $25 for three years.  Registration tags are required by law; registration fees are separate and required at time of rabies vaccination. Discounts for senior residents apply and for pets who have been previously spayed or neutered. Microchips are $15.

There is no cure for rabies, and it is almost always fatal. Rabies vaccinations provide your pet with the best protection against this disease.  Unlike dog tags and collars which can fall off or be removed, microchips are a more permanent form of pet identification.  Animal microchips are about the size of a grain of rice and are typically implanted just beneath the surface of the skin between the shoulder blades. The process is similar to receiving vaccination through a needle.

Adoptions ($80) will also be available.  All adoptions include age-appropriate vaccinations, spay/neuter, FELV & FIV testing, microchip, heartworm and free 1st Veterinarian visit at participating veterinarians.  To view available pets, visit
