New Manufacturing Research Lab planned for our region

Chicago's Goose Island aea will be home to the new Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute. Announced this week, this lab is the result of a public-private partnership which includes 23 Universities and over 40 other companies, organizations and entitites. The Executive Director of the facility is Caralynn Nowinski.  The goal of the institute is to be a place for manufacturers to learn about the latest digital technoloigies.  Reserachers and entrepreneurs alike will be able to work out ideas, try new theories, products and hopefully grow businesses.   Director Nowinski emphasized in the Chicago Tribune article on February 24, 2014, that the goal is not to just do research, but "commercialize" so that new products are created as well as jobs.

The primary role of the Rockford Area Economic Development Council is to enhance wealth creation in the Rockford Region by marketing the area and helping employers retain and create quality jobs. The RAEDC works closely with many partners to serve as a one-stop resource for clients, to improve the competitiveness of the region, and to engage the community in the work of economic development.



The Illinois SBDC International Trade Center of the Rockford Area (ITC) is a program that works directly with companies to increase the total value of goods exported from the Rockford Area of Illinois. Services are provided to companies to walk them through the process of establishing and growing an export program. The ITC also can provide assistance to foreign companies interested in sourcing manufactured products from the United States.

Tebots team at Tornado cleanup smallTebots, Inc. of Huntley sends Crew to Coal City / Diamond, Il.  Friday Nov. 22,  to aid with Tornado Site Cleanup.

Robert Tegel, President of Tebots, Inc. issued the following statement on his team's return from helping with Tornado cleanup.

"The amount of damage was significant and undifferentiating. The local people of these communities did a phenomenal job of immediately responding to clean up. From what I was told the cleanup began twenty minutes after the storm passed.  I was impressed by the organization and overall support headed by the local government. Recognized immediately, was the positive attitudes of those involved and the well-organized management of countless volunteers.  A response by the public from all over the region, demonstrates what we all can do in community.  Volunteering puts our country back together. They truly appreciated us being there.

We all had a positive experience and no injuries.  A valued glove went into the chipper; our only negative for the day.  Our crew was so thrilled we were invited to help. In my opinion there is no greater joy than to help someone else in situations like this.   

"Thanks to our fantastic team and the cities of Diamond and Coal City for making this such a positive experience in your time of need!"

2013 Annual Investors Meeting

Annual Meeting of Investors held November 19, 2013

The McHenry County Economic Development Corporation held its Annual Meeting of Investors and Annual Board of Directors Meeting on November 19th, 2013.


“McHenry County EDC has been a consistent voice for business for the over 22 years. Our mission is to support the creation of primary jobs by focusing on retention, expansion and attraction” said Chairman of the Board Gary Overbay, as he reviewed activities for 2013.


Two new Board of Directors were elected to the board – Hank Holly, Director of Operations - Aptargroup and Dean Breuer, External Affairs Manager - ComEd. Other Board of Directors also elected and who will be serving from 2014 to 2016 are Brad Heldt - Home State Bank, Dave Johnson – Village of Huntley, Mark Steadman - Stan’s Office Technologies. Elected to serve a second term are Susan Milford – Centegra Health System and John Rung – Shaw Media.


Chairman Overbay continued “MCEDC affects positive change and economic growth; strategic leadership is vital as we move ahead with our 2014 – 2017 Strategic Plan and we are pleased to have the professional acumen of these outstanding leaders”.


The officers of the corporation for 2014 - 2016 were also elected and are Chairman of the Board Susan Milford, Centegra Health System - Vice Chairman James Maravich, BMO Harris – Treasurer David Hubbard, Exemplar Financial and Secretary Mark Saladin, Zanck, Coen Wright & Saladin, PC.


Recognized for their contributions and efforts on behalf of McHenry County EDC was retiring Board Members Joe Foley, Corporate Disk and Gary Overbay, Civiltech Engineering.


McHenry County EDC President, Pam Cumpata, extended her appreciation and thanks to the Board and to all of the investor/members of the organization who have supported our efforts financially, but also contributed over 556 hours of their time to help grow the economy. She reported further that “throughout the year, we have been able to provide customized support to over 700 businesses, municipalities, residents and government entities. We have raised the visibility of McHenry County regionally, nationally and internationally. Our resource capabilities have been broadened with the addition of demographic statistical reporting and economic modeling software enabling us to create over 400 requested individualized reports. Through our business advocacy and customized support, we increased our assistance 56% over 2012 and our support impacted 21,700 employees equaling 30% of the total primary employment in McHenry County. Other highlights include the 6th Annual Business Champions recognition, the Manufacturing Matchmaking event where we facilitated over 600 one to one business appointments to increase supply chain opportunities and began initial work on creating a Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) for McHenry County. We continued to work steadily on infrastructure including the ongoing fiber optic broadband project, and are proud of our contribution to the creation of the full interchange at IL 47 and I 90 in Huntley. 


Cumpata commented further “2013 was very successful and with the leadership, guidance and support of our Board of Directors and investor/members, and our collaborative partners. We look forward to 2014 as we continue to advance business and help build the economic wealth of McHenry County.”

2013 Business Champion Award Recipients

McHenry County Economic Development (MCEDC) announced the 2013 Business Champion Award winners at the MCEDC Annual Dinner on November 5, 2013. Over 400 business leaders attended the event which culminates with the Business Champion Award presentations

For the past six years, MCEDC has recognized outstanding companies who have positively contributed to McHenry County’s economy and who have exhibited business acumen and vision. Judging is conducted by a panel of 9 independent and unbiased business leaders residing outside of McHenry County.  Pam Cumpata, President of MCEDC commented “ McHenry County is fortunate to have so many outstanding companies. There were 15 business champion finalists.” The 2013 Business Champions were presented their awards by Harry Kraemer, (Board Member of Sage Products, LLC, Executive Partner, Madison Dearborn Partners, Clinical Professor of Management and Strategy, Kellogg School of Management, Former Chairman and CEO of Baxter International) keynote speaker at the Annual Dinner and by Gary Overbay, MCEDC Chairman of the Board.

Phoenix Woodworking, Huntley was selected in Category 1 (less than 25 employees). Faced the many challenges of the recent recession, this company worked hard to keep everyone employed by reducing hours and using downtime to provide training and build on certifications. Sandra Pierce, President, accepted the award. Cumpata noted that Sandra not only has an outstanding company, but she is active leader in many organizations and a long time investor/member in MCEDC.

In the mid-size company category of 25 to 100 employees, Advanced Flexible Components, Lake in the Hills, is the 2013 Business Champion. This company is a family owned business who really believes in family. They have been in business in McHenry County for over 25 years, have had double digit growth and grown their businesses into a multi-site facility. Cumpata noted that not only were they a family owned company, but they believe in hiring family members – brothers, sisters, husband/wife, etc. and have found it to provide a stable work environment. Bill Lewis, President accepted the award with Vice President Dale Lewis cheering him on.

Watlow of Richmond is the winner in the category 100 to 299 employees. This company was nominated by an employee who began as a temp employee in 1993 and who wanted to recognize the tremendous employee support and training this company provides.   Cumpata commented that this company has a culture that recognizes the employees as team members and provides them with on-site education opportunities to help them develop and grow professionally. They have been a strong partner with MCEDC in its effort to help inspire young people to go into manufacturing as a career. Nathan Frost, Director of Operations accepted the award on behalf of the entire team.

In the category of over 300 employees, the judges had quite a challenge since all of the nominees were exceptional companies who bring value to McHenry County. Karl Schult, Engineering Manager accepted the award for Covidien of Crystal Lake. This company has invested over $17 million in capital over the last four years, developed an initiative which prevented over 6 million pounds of scrap from entering landfills, relocated a subsidiary from Texas to Crystal Lake, increased employment by approximately 100 jobs and developed a new intern program with a local high school. Pam Cumpata commented that Covidien is another strong partner in helping to encourage young people on the value of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education.

Website - Affordable Care Act

One-Stop-Shop Website to Educate Business Owners About the Affordable Care Act

The Obama Administration today launched, a one-stop-shop which will provide employers of all sizes educational materials on how the Affordable Care Act may affect businesses and help them compete. The site includes a wizard tool that is tailored based on size and location, so businesses can learn how the law helps them provide affordable coverage options to their employees while still meeting their bottom line. The site will act as a user-friendly hub that connects employers to informational content on tax credits and other provisions of the law from the Small Business Administration, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and the Treasury Department. As part of the Administration's ongoing dialogue with leaders of our nation's top businesses, this latest tool will help ensure that employers of all sizes know what the Affordable Care Act means for them, and have the information they need to take advantage of the new benefits and opportunities under the law. The Administration will work with the employer community to ensure the site continues to be a helpful resource for businesses and their employees, including updating the site with additional, timely information. Many parts of the Affordable Care Act, which was signed into law in March, 2010, are already in effect, including new consumer protections, and improvements to health care coverage that ensure consumers get more value for their premium dollars. Additional benefits will take effect in late 2013 and beyond. Starting October 1, 2013, individuals, including those who are self-employed, and small businesses looking for a better plan, will have a new way to shop for private health insurance through the Health Insurance Marketplace and the Small Business Health Options Program (SHOP) found at Individuals may be eligible for lower costs on their monthly premiums and self-employed individuals and small businesses may be eligible for tax credits to help with the costs of coverage. 2013 Business Champion Nominations

2013 Business Champion Nominations Underway

awardS 3 VERY SMALLMcHenry County Economic Development Corporation (MCEDC) is accepting nominations for the 2013 Business Champion Awards.   In its sixth year, MCEDC recognizes outstanding companies who have made a positive impact on McHenry County’s economy and who are exceptional primary employers. (A primary employer is defined as the one creating a product or service that is principally sold outside of a region, thereby generating new money and profits into the region. Examples include manufacturing, back-office operations or service centers, corporate headquarters, distribution facilities and research and development to name a few.)

Nominations categories are based on the number of employees -  small -24 or less, medium – 25 to 100, and large - over 100.    Judges are business leaders from outside of the county.  All nominees are introduced during the MCEDC Annual Dinner Tuesday, November 5th, 2013 at the Holiday Inn in Crystal Lake, with the three 2013 Business Champions announced and presented at that time.

Pam Cumpata, MCEDC President stated “MCEDC’s  previous Business Champions -  Chroma Corporation, All-Rite Spring, Impact Plastics in 2012;  Other World Computing, Dordan Manufacturing, Joule Technologies in 2011; Scot Forge, Jan Air, Astro Craft in 2010;   Medela, Millennium Electronics, Stan’s Office Technologies in 2009;  Pioneer Center for Human Services, Prairie Ridge Media/McHenry County Living, & New Concepts Development Corporation/Other World Computing in 2008 are all exceptional primary employers and valuable corporate citizens.
